"Siglufjörður, the northernmost town in Iceland, is simply adorable. Sigló, as everyone calls it, is a small fishing town (population 1,300) on a fjord with the same name. The surrounding mountains are snowcapped much of the year. Though founded in 1873, there wasn't much here until the herring industry was established in the 1940s. The herring weren't sustainable, so the processing plants closed after thirty years. But fishermen and a surprising art scene remained. It's now home to the Herring Era Museum, a Herring Festival (August), a Folk Music Festival (July), and Siglufjarðarkirkja (a church that also holds events). Trapped, an Icelandic crime-drama series, was filmed almost entirely here. Plus a boutique hotel, Sigló Hótel, finally opened a few years ago. So Siglufjörður is now a great place to stay, not just pass through, as you drive around the Troll Peninsula.
Note: Sigló is still considered a summer destination. Though beautiful all year, many businesses are closed or have greatly reduced hours once September arrives."
