These caves are formed every year anew through the growing and melting of the glacier, but only during the colder winter months, from about November to mid-March, they are safe enough to be entered. A guided tour usually includes the transport to and back from an outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull, the equipment (crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe) and, of course, an expert who knows the region. So all you need to bring are some hiking boots with ancle support, warm outdoor clothes (synthetic or wool shirt, leggings and socks as base layer, as well as synthetic or wool fleeces/pullovers as mid layers, gloves, hat, waterproof jacket, waterproof pants) and a backpack with some drink and snacks.
