"Þakgil was the MOST incredible campsite we found in Iceland--nothing else comes close to the beauty of this place. Getting there can be a bit challenging as the road is borderline F-road quality, but we, and other similar 2x2 camper vans had no trouble making our way to the campsite. It takes about 30-45 minutes to reach the campsite from the Ring Road, but trust us when we say that the drive here is one of the most stunning you will find in Iceland.
The campsite itself is tucked in a little valley between green mountains and has clean, high-quality facilities, including toilets, free hot showers, a dish cleaning station, and a CAVE in which you can cook, eat dinner, and even BBQ!
There are also many really amazing-looking hikes near the campsite as well, though we did not have a chance to do any of them. If you have the time, we recommend taking a look to see if any interests you.
Do yourself a favor and make this drive (during daylight so you get the views) to spend the night here.
Cost: ~$17.5 per person + van/car. Use of bathrooms costs 200 ISK (honor system) and hot showers are free ($35 total for two people not including bathroom usage)
Parking: You can park pretty much anywhere either left or right of the entrance. If you want, you can strategically place yourself close to the cave and bathroom facilities. "

"If you're looking to get off the main tourist track in Iceland and see some cool natural sights, We highly recommend visiting Thakgil Canyon near the town of Vik in South Iceland. This spot is a hidden gem that not many travelers know about yet. The canyon, whose name means "canyon of the roof" in Icelandic, has some really neat dramatic cliffs and rock formations that are covered in super bright green moss. "
