" Black pebble beach with rusted remains of an old fishing vessel. Years ago the beach was a harbor for many fishing ships, but is now deserted after a massive storm shipwrecked the boat in 1984. Time: 1 hour Rating: 5/5 Crowds: moderate-busy Vehicle: all accessible Parking: medium parking lot - free Accessibility: there is a wooden walking path to get down to the beach that turns to dirt/sand further down. Seasonal: difficult to access in winter - good hiking shoes required Amenities: toilets Views: there's a LOT to take in on this beach. Notice the lava formations, there's a small lake to your right just as you enter the beach, walk down to the ocean and peek closer at the rusted iron pieces along the way. Pro-tip: On the walk to the beach are four lifting stones of various weights. These were used many years ago by fishermen to test their strength to qualify men to work on the fishing boats. The lightest one is called Amlóði (Useless) at 23 kg, it's easy to lift, and the heaviest one is 154 kg called Fullsterkur (full strength). The Hálfdrættingur sone (54 kg) was the minimum weight a man would have to lift onto to qualify for the ships. More info: if you have extra time, hike 1km to Dritvik cove - a secluded black sand beach."

"Now for the real reason you drove to Djúpalónssandur: the black-lava-pearl beach. Djúpalónsperlur is stunning from afar. It's even more impressive up close. Instead of sand, the beach is covered with small, smooth black pebbles, hence the name the Pearls of Djúpalón. The stones are soft and look like they've been polished. They're frequently--and illegally--used to make jewelry. You feel like you should be looking around at the impressive landscape, but you can't stop looking straight down at the ground."
