"If you only visit one museum in South Iceland, make it Skógasafn (Skógar Museum). This cultural heritage site (opened since 1949) combines three history museums, six historical buildings, and nearly 20,000 regional artifacts into one interesting site. The Folk Museum has fishing, argiculture, furnishings and handcrafts, and natural history sections. The Open Air Museum has a turf-roof farmhouse (reproduction), a schoolhouse, a church, and even elf houses. While the Technical Museum shows how technology and transportation developed in Iceland. It sounds like a lot. It is. But it's easy to skip around to find the parts that you find interesting. There's a café and a shop on the grounds. Guided tours are also available. Note: The museum is open all year, but its hours vary by season. Check the current schedule online before visiting."

"The museum is charming even for those who are not big fans of museums. You can enter to visit the turf-roofed houses, which were built to preserve heat in the homes of Icelandic farmers. You can see an old Icelandic school and an ancient Icelandic church and learn about the Icelandic way of life of farmers who found solutions for living in the challenging climate prevailing on the island."
