"Palazzo Re Enzo is a palace in Bologna, northern Italy. It is named after Enzio of Sardinia, son of Frederick II, who was imprisoned there from 1249 until his death in 1272. The palace was built in 1245 as an extension of the Palazzo del Podestà, which was insufficient for the needs of the commune of Bologna. It was initially known as the Palatium Novum ("New Palace"). Three years after its construction, Enzio was captured by the Guelphs at the Battle of Fossalta, and after a brief stay in Anzola he was placed there, where he remained until his death. In 1386 Antonio di Vincenzo finished the Sala dei Trecento, which would become the city archive. The top floor was extensively renovated in 1771 by Giovanni Giacomo Dotti, and its present Gothic appearance dates from its 1905 restoration by Alfonso Rubbiani. To the right of the palace is the entrance to the chapel of Santa Maria dei Carcerati, where those condemned to death went. On the first floor were the Carroccio and the war machines."
