What people say

"The Cordoaria Nacional building, created by the Marquês de Pombal by decree of 1771, was probably built to a design by architect Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos in the second half of the 18th century. This set of workshops distributed across 3 bodies stretched parallel to the Tagus River, on the site of the old S. João fort, was intended for the production of ropes, cables, sails and other equipment for ships. Of its architectural design, practically devoid of decoration, only the central portals of the north and south facades, respectively, stand out, with stonework framing animated by an apron window and curved lintel and with a depressed arched framing and lintel. Although this building has been the subject of several interventions over time imposed by fires in the 19th and 20th centuries and the need to install services other than its original vocation, as well as transformations in the surrounding road network (opening of Av. da India) , is considered one of the most notable examples of 18th century industrial architecture, and is classified as a National Monument."
