"The name of Knossos, established in the Neolithic period, survives from ancient Greek references to the main city of Crete. The Palace of Knossos eventually became the ceremonial and political center of Minoan civilization and culture. The palace was abandoned at the end of the Late Bronze Age, ca. 1380-1100 Ave. Cr. The cause is unknown but is usually attributed to one of the many disasters that befell the palace.
During the period of the First Palace (about 2000 BC), the area of the city reached as many as 18,000 people. At its peak, the palace and surrounding city housed 100,000 people shortly after 1700 BC.
