"I have these two hikes grouped together as both of these hikes are within the alpine lake zone called "The Enchantments". The Enchantments are a a multi-zone area with an endless amount of alpine lakes to explore. The hike to Snow Lakes is a long and strenuous one. It does not require mountaineering experience, but having some hiking experience is suggested. Snow Lakes is a gorgeous lake to camp at overnight with a handful of campsites along the lake (including a small sandy beach area). I suggest you plan at least 3 days/2 nights for the Enchantments trip, as you will want to hike into Snow Lakes the first night. On the second day, you will want to hike into the Core of the Enchantments and thoroughly explore the area. It is loaded with scenery and endless alpine lakes. On the second evening, hike out of the Core and back to Snow Lakes, and then hike out of Snow Lakes on the final (third) day.
Length: 15.2 miles round trip just to Snow Lakes. The Core of the Enchantments requires an additional 6-10 miles depending on how much of the area you want to explore.
Elevation gain: 4,560 ft to Snow Lakes. An additional 1000+ ft if you plan to hike into the Core of the Enchantments.
Trail type: Out & back
Location: Leavenworth & the Enchantments. The trail leaves from the Snow Lakes trailhead.
Best time to visit: Late May through October.
Parking instructions: There is parking at the trailhead.
Camping: Overnight camping is suggested since this is such a long hike. Overnight camping requires permits that can be obtained via a lottery system. They're very difficult to win. You can find more information about applying for the permits in the link provided in this place card.
Gear suggestions: If you are able to obtain overnight Enchantment camping permits, please see the camping gear suggestions section of this guide.
Drinkable water access: There are many lakes to filter water at along the route.
Photography suggestions: There are endless photography opportunities along the hike to Snow Lakes, as well as at Snow Lakes. I suggest trying to do photography early in the morning at Snow Lakes, hoping for flat water conditions to get some incredible reflection pics on the water (see the photos provided for examples). Once you get to the Core of the Enchantments, you will have an endless amount of photo ops near the lakes and overlooks. "
