"💚 Visiting the Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge feels surreal, like following a secret path into a mountain.
‼️ But this stop is not for everyone. The uphill hike might be strenuous for some. And once you get inside, you must scramble in tight spaces over slippery rocks!
🏥 Proceed at your own risk. Remember, if you fall and hurt yourself while in Iceland, medical help may be a long way off.
🚗 From the parking lot, you can see up to the crevice that cuts through the mountain cliff.
📸 After the hike up, enter with caution. Don’t get me wrong, it’s super cool inside, but my favourite photos are from the outside, gazing up at the gapping gorge entrance in the moss-covered cliff.
1️⃣ To reach the first inner chamber requires a bit of scrambling over slippery boulders.
📸 This is another good photo spot as you stand in a towering moss-lined cave open to the sky.
💦 Be prepared to get a little wet as water running down from the mountains flows out through this crevice.
💦 It was only a drizzle when I was there, but I imagine it's more powerful in the spring.
🚫 DO NOT attempt if it is icy!
👉 Going further into the mountain's interior is challenging as the passage gets narrower; the boulders are bigger and quite slippery. I attempted, but I don’t recommend it.
🇮🇸 The Rauðfeldsgjá gorge was mentioned in the 14th century Icelandic Sagas in connection with the half-human, half-troll Bárðar.

" If you didn't know any better, you'd think that crevice was just another geological feature of the mountain. However, inside you will find a magical waterfall! A short 15 minute hike up the hillside brings you right into this gem. Rauðfeldsgjá translates to "red-coat-canyon" Time: 45 minutes Rating: 4/5 Crowds: few Vehicle: all accessible, but I wouldn't suggest doing this in the winter. Parking: small lot - free Pro-tip: At the top of the hill, make sure to take in the views back over the peninsula!"

"3.stop
– a surreal, grandiose canyon located in the Botnsfjall Mountains
- lots of birds (Fullmars, ravens)
-access to the interior of the canyon leads past or through the waterfall - you must have sturdy, waterproof shoes
- headlamps necessary in case of a snow roof (we visited the canyon at the end of June and the road was under a layer of snow)
-quite a lot of tourists, still tolerable. "
