Democracy Monument

"The Democracy Monument, located on Ratchadamnoen Avenue in the heart of Bangkok, is a public monument commemorating the 1932 Siamese coup d'état, which transitioned Thailand from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. Commissioned by Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram in 1939, it was designed by architect Chitrasen Aphaiwong with sculptor Corrado Feroci, known later as Silpa Bhirasri. The monument symbolizes the pivotal moment of the 1932 revolution, with the central feature being a sculpted representation of the 1932 Thai Constitution in a palm-leaf manuscript box, perched atop two golden offering bowls. These bowls rest on a round turret, guarded by four wings symbolizing the Thai military branches involved in the coup: the army, navy, air force, and police. The monument’s design incorporates several symbolic elements. The wings are 24 meters high, marking the date of the coup, June 24, while the central turret stands 3 meters tall, representing the third month of the traditional Thai calendar. Originally, 75 small cannons surrounded the monument, signifying the year of the coup, 2475 in the Buddhist calendar. The six gates of the turret stand for the six proclaimed policies of the People’s Party, including independence, peace, equality, freedom, economy, and education. Fountains resembling naga—protective creatures from Hindu and Buddhist mythology—adorn two of the wings, adding to the monument's cultural and symbolic depth. The relief sculptures at the base of the monument depict propagandistic scenes, presenting the armed forces as the heroic champions of democracy, with the coup portrayed as a righteous act carried out for the benefit of the people. The sculptures illustrate military figures in action and represent the nation's balance between military power, justice, and the promotion of social values such as education, sport, and religion. The Democracy Monument stands as a reflection of the military’s role in Thailand's shift toward democracy, despite its controversial and propagandistic nature."
