"This small memorial by the side of the road to Theth honours Franz Nopcsa von Felső-Szilvás, an Hungarian aristocrat and historican from the 19th Century who was a pioneer of the studies of Northern Albania, being the first to map it. Baron Franz Nopcsa was deeply fascinated by Albania, likely sparked by stories from Albanian mountain tribesmen, introduced to him by Louis Drašković, who was thought to be his first lover. Throughout his life, Nopcsa published over fifty scientific studies on Albania, covering topics such as linguistics, folklore, ethnology, history, and customary law (Kanun). He became one of the leading experts on Albania during his time. After his death, several of his important manuscripts remained unpublished. Nopcsa had participated in the Albanian Congress of Trieste and his notes on the event gained historical significance. He bequeathed his Albanological estate, including thousands of pages of notes, sketches, and finished texts, to Norbert Jokl, a renowned Albanian studies specialist. This material eventually ended up in the hands of Mid'hat Bey Frashëri, but was confiscated by the communist regime of Enver Hoxha. Ultimately, Nopcsa's manuscripts and drawings became a significant part of the Albanological section of Albania's National Library."
