"Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are the big draws along this stretch of the Ring Road. Every tour bus stops at both of them. They're stunning waterfalls. But there's a possibility that neither one is ultimately your favorite along the south coast. Enter Kvernufoss.
Kvernufoss is near Skógafoss. It's actually hidden behind the Skógar Museum. After parking at Kvernufoss Bílastæði (the Kvernufoss Parking Lot), you'll follow the path through a gate (be sure to close it behind you), along the Kverna river, and into a gorge. The hike is easy; it takes about 20 minutes. Then you'll see Kvernufoss dropping 98 feet over a ledge up ahead.
The waterfall is, without a doubt, stunning. But why might it be your favorite? You can walk behind it. The path around the left side of Kvernufoss inclines and curves around it. It leads to an open space, where the water will tumble behind--not in front--of you. Though you may get wet, it's worth it for the magical moment. Fingers crossed you have it all to yourself for at least a few minutes.
Note: You must pay to park at Kvernufoss Bílastæði. You can use Iceland's Parka app or your ticket from visiting the Skógar Museum."

" About: MAGICAL waterfall and one of my favorite places in all of Iceland and you will likely be the ONLY person there! Truly a hidden gem. Time: 1 hour Rating: 10/5 Crowds: very few - still considered a hidden gem Vehicle: only accessible via walking Parking: no parking - park at Skogar museum and walk ~1km to the North Directions: After visiting Skogafoss, drive to Skógar museum and park your car there. Walk around the back side of the museum towards a river. You will cross a fence and walk through a small field to reach the river (you will feel like you are trespassing! just keep walking) When you reach the river follow it back into the valley until you see the waterfall. Views: The closer you get to the waterfall the more magical it gets! Seasonal: I wouldn’t recommend tackling this in the winter - snow and ice would make this walk very dangerous Amenities: none Pro-tip: You can walk behind it! Just be very careful as the rocks get slippery AND you get very wet from the spray!"

"Kvernufoss, tucked away on the south coast of Iceland, is a hidden gem often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Skógafoss. But for those seeking a unique and thrilling waterfall experience, Kvernufoss offers a chance to get up close and personal with cascading water.
Standing at a respectable 30 meters (98 feet) tall, Kvernufoss plunges dramatically over moss-covered cliffs. What makes it truly special is the accessible pathway that leads you behind the cascading water. Imagine the feeling of the spray misting your face as you stand in the heart of the waterfall's power! This unique perspective offers a whole new way to appreciate the raw force and beauty of Icelandic waterfalls.
Finding Kvernufoss is relatively easy. It's located just a few hundred meters east of Skógafoss along the Ring Road. Look for the turnoff near the Skógafoss Museum, and a short hike will lead you to this secret wonder. Just be prepared to get a little wet on your adventure behind the falls!"
