Hrdličkovo muzeum člověka

What people say

"Four thousand exhibits are located in the premises of the Hrdliček Museum of Man. Here you will find copies of findings from all over the world that document our entire evolution up to the modern type of man. The museum houses exhibits showing examples of natural and artificial mummification as well as Egyptian mummies. The museum is located in the building of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Charles University in Prague 2. The museum has the character of a university collection and is divided into two departments - the museum part (accessible to the public) and the depository (intended for study and scientific purposes). The museum houses approximately four thousand exhibits, many of which are unique. However, visiting the museum is not suitable for children under 12 years of age. The part that shows the phylogenetic development of man is documented with plaster casts of findings of evolutionarily more advanced primates (Hominoidea) up to Homo sapiens sapiens. They include both finds from our territory (Šipka, Brno, Pavlov, Dolní Věstonice, Předmostí u Přerova, etc.) and foreign finds. For example, the exposed trepanned skulls will teach you about the first operations that were carried out in prehistoric times. The paleopathology collection contains skeletal remains, on which we can notice various diseases and injuries of people from the 16th-18th centuries. You can also view the collection of the Czech ethnologist and anthropologist Pavel Šebesta, which contains casts of various body parts and hair samples of Pygmies. Vladimír Foit, an academic painter, gathered an interesting collection from his travels in Africa, which reveals the life of African tribes. The collection of artificially deformed skulls of Central and South American Indians is also very rare. Casts of hands, ground teeth, casts of scar tattoos and a hair sampler complete the collection. The ethnic anthropology section contains a large collection of facial casts – exhibits from Professor Suk's travels, Mongolian and Eskimo facial casts and casts of various anthropological types from Slovakia obtained by Professor Malý. No less interesting is the collection of casts of death masks of famous personalities (Beethoven, Masaryk, Beneš and others). The museum houses exhibits showing examples of natural and artificial mummification (eg Egyptian mummies). You will also find here a collection of bone pathologies and abnormalities, which was collected by Prof. Matiegka."
