What people say

"The space has already served as a Slaughterhouse, Bullring, Flea Market, and Vegetable Market. In 1879, the former Campo de Santana was renamed Campo dos Mártires da Pátria in memory of the hanging there, in 1817, of Gomes Freire de Andrade's companions suspected of conspiracy. The southern half is occupied by Jardim Braancamp Freire, with at the end the statue of Dr. Sousa Martins and the building of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, in the same location as the old Bullring. In the northern half of the building there is an outdoor multi-sports field. The entire garden has an organic layout with an imposing and ancient grove of trees, among which stands out a Himalayan cedar, a large tree known as the Valentine's Tree. There are also some lakes, surrounded by ducks, chickens and roosters, a very popular terrace, and a children's garden."
