"Built in the 17th century (exact date unknown) by the Greek Orthodox community of Istanbul. Served as the seat (center) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the spiritual leader of Orthodox Christians worldwide, until 1923. After the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922) and the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, the Patriarchate's administrative center moved to Phanar, Istanbul. Despite this shift, the Aziz George Katedrali remains a symbolic and revered church for the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
Neoclassical architecture with a rectangular footprint and a central dome. The exterior is relatively modest compared to other Byzantine or Ottoman religious structures. The interior, however, is known for its rich decoration, featuring frescoes, chandeliers, and icons depicting scenes from the Bible and the life of Saint George."
