"Sanam Luang, meaning "royal turf," is a significant open field and public square located in front of Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand. Covering an area of 74.5 rai (119,200 square meters), it is situated in the Phra Nakhon District, the historic heart of the city. Historically, Sanam Luang has been the site of important royal ceremonies, including cremations, since the reign of King Rama I. Initially called "Thung Phra Men" (the royal cremation ground), it was renamed Sanam Luang by King Rama IV in 1855. The site has hosted numerous royal events, including the cremation of high-ranking royals and ceremonial rites like the Royal Ploughing Ceremony.
Over the years, Sanam Luang has evolved, with King Rama V overseeing its expansion and transformation in the late 19th century. He planted rows of tamarind trees around the field, adding to its aesthetic and cultural importance. It was also used for various events, from kite flying and horse races to ceremonial functions. In the 20th century, Sanam Luang continued to be a site for national ceremonies, including those of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and other royal family members. During the 2016 mourning period for the king's death, the field became a focal point for public tributes.
In recent history, Sanam Luang has also seen political gatherings, including protests in 2020, reflecting its ongoing significance as both a cultural and political space. The field remains a cherished part of Bangkok’s historical landscape, serving as a symbol of Thailand’s royal traditions and national identity."
