Ethnographic Museum

"The Ethnographic Museum is situated on the site of the former residence of Enver Hoxha, the communist dictator of Albania. The original house, where Hoxha was born in 1908, was destroyed by a fire. The current building was reconstructed between 1964 and 1966 not as a replica of Hoxha’s residence but as a representation of traditional Gjirokastra houses. This reconstruction incorporates many classic cultural elements borrowed from other beautiful houses in the city, giving visitors an authentic glimpse into the region's architectural style. Despite its association with Hoxha, the museum does not feature any of his belongings, personal effects, or historical references related to his life. Instead, the interior of the museum is designed to reflect the finest examples of 19th-century Gjirokastra homes. Each room is arranged to illustrate how they would have been used historically, providing insight into the daily lives of the people during that period. The decorations include a wide array of cultural artifacts, household items, folk costumes, clothing, and kitchenware, showcasing the rich heritage of the local community. Visiting the Ethnographic Museum offers a unique opportunity to understand the cultural and social history of Gjirokastra and its people, independent of the narrative surrounding Hoxha's regime.
