Opéra de Nice

"The first version of the Nice Opera House was known as the “petit théâtre en bois” and was built in 1776 by the Marquis Alli-Maccarani. Since then, the theater has undergone several reconstructions, name changes and even a tragic fire in 1881. The building has been known as Théâtre Royal, Théâtre Impérial, Théâtre Municipal and is currently called Nice Opera. This place has been the stage for several operas, concerts and ballets, many of which were performed for important authorities, such as Napoleon III, Louis II of Bavaria and Tsar Alexander II of Russia. The building that currently houses the Nice Opera was designed by the famous architect François Aune in collaboration with Charles Garnier, architect of the Opera Garnier in Paris. The building's eclectic exterior is marked by two beautiful facades and its interior is in Italian style with a ceiling painted by Emmanuel Costa. The venue's layout was changed several times after its construction to improve acoustics. It has been carefully restored and remains one of Nice's most important cultural centers."
