A bit of context

Bathed in the golden light of the French Riviera, Nice, the heart of the Alpes-Maritimes department, beguiles visitors with its rich tapestry of history, layered like the sun-drenched stones of its ancient citadel. Nestled between the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the rugged French Alps, the city's story unfolds over millennia.

Evidence of settlements stretches back to the days of Celtic tribes, while Greeks from Marseille are credited with founding the city around 350 BC, naming it Nikaia after the Greek goddess of victory, Nike. Over the centuries, Nice has been a coveted prize, shaped by the reigns of various empires.

The Romans transformed it into a flourishing port city, leaving behind a legacy of baths and an arena. Later, Nice thrived under the rule of the Counts of Savoy for centuries, who imbued it with a unique blend of Italianate charm and French elegance. This fascinating interplay of cultures is evident in the city's architecture, from the austere beauty of the Genoese Cathedral to the ornate palaces lining the Promenade des Anglais.

Today, Nice reflects this rich heritage in its very soul. Wander the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town and you'll encounter Roman ruins whispering of the city's ancient past. Ascend Castle Hill for panoramic views and explore the imposing Citadel, a fortress that chronicles centuries of rule. Stroll along the vibrant flower market, a riot of colors and scents, and soak in the atmosphere of a city where history and joie de vivre intertwine.
