"Have you ever hiked up a volcano? Here's your chance. Hverfjall is a tuff ring volcano (a low-standing volcano with a wide, bowl-shaped crater) that hovers over Mývatn's eastern shore. It last erupted 4,500 years ago, give or take, and shows no signs of waking up anytime soon. The journey starts with a drive through a moon-like, volcanic landscape. Hverfjall looms up ahead. There's a large parking lot and a new building with clean bathrooms (fee for both). Then there's the well-worn trail covered with black rocks and ash. The ascent is 330 feet (moderately challenging) plus a one-kilometer loop around the top of the crater (total distance 2.7 miles). The views from the top are breathtaking. You can see Dimmuborgir and the lake below. On a clear day, Askja (an active volcano) is in the distance. You just conquered a volcano. Pretty impressive."

"4. stop
- one of the most beautiful craters in Iceland
- the access to the crater from the parking lot takes approx. 15-20 minutes, up a steep hill
- elevation 90 meters
-the circuit is 3.2 km long and several tourist routes lead from there (we did not complete the circuit)
- the view from the crater is really panoramic - lava fields, geothermal area, lake, other hills - really beautiful
- it is the largest crater of its kind"

"Hverfjall is a near symmetrical, dust crater around Myvatn area that appeared 2,700 years ago. It is a circular crater 460 feet deep and .6 miles wide. You can look at it from a far or take the small path up to peek in or walk around the rim!
1 to 1.5 hours to explore due to hike up to the rim."
