"Have you ever hiked up a volcano? Here's your chance. Hverfjall is a tuff ring volcano (a low-standing volcano with a wide, bowl-shaped crater) that hovers over Mývatn's eastern shore. It last erupted 4,500 years ago, give or take, and shows no signs of waking up anytime soon. The journey starts with a drive through a moon-like, volcanic landscape. Hverfjall looms up ahead. There's a large parking lot and a new building with clean bathrooms (fee for both). Then there's the well-worn trail covered with black rocks and ash. The ascent is 330 feet (moderately challenging) plus a one-kilometer loop around the top of the crater (total distance 2.7 miles). The views from the top are breathtaking. You can see Dimmuborgir and the lake below. On a clear day, Askja (an active volcano) is in the distance. You just conquered a volcano. Pretty impressive."

"4. stop - one of the most beautiful craters in Iceland - the access to the crater from the parking lot takes approx. 15-20 minutes, up a steep hill - elevation 90 meters -the circuit is 3.2 km long and several tourist routes lead from there (we did not complete the circuit) - the view from the crater is really panoramic - lava fields, geothermal area, lake, other hills - really beautiful - it is the largest crater of its kind"

"Hverfjall is a near symmetrical, dust crater around Myvatn area that appeared 2,700 years ago. It is a circular crater 460 feet deep and .6 miles wide. You can look at it from a far or take the small path up to peek in or walk around the rim! 1 to 1.5 hours to explore due to hike up to the rim."

Mentioned in these guides

Active volcanoes. Dancing northern lights. Gushing geysers. Massive glaciers. Thermal hot springs. Thundering waterfalls. Iceland is the ultimate adventure destination. How have you not been here yet? It’s finally time. Start in the northernmost capital in the world. Reykjavik is a hip, modern city. Then start exploring the wild coastline, the sheep-filled countryside, the icy interior, and the peaceful islands. There are plenty of black-sand beaches, small fishing villages, turf-roofed houses, and epic hikes along the way. Just remember to pack layers. Sometimes, the Gulf Stream provides moderate temperatures. Other times, it’ll feel like you’re in the Arctic. Also don’t forget the long, dark winters and the 24-hour daylight during the short summers. If you take advantage of Icelandair’s free stopover program—a great excuse to visit Helsinki, Copenhagen, and even Paris—you can keep returning to discover which season you like best.
