What people say

"The monastery originally had an oratory dedicated to Saint Mary called Corticela, which was demolished at the end of the 9th century, with the exception of the chapel, which is now part of the Cathedral of Santiago, when King Alfonso III the Great and Bishop Sisnando began work on the new cathedral. The monastery was built in 899 and the Benedictine monks from the old oratory were transferred to it. This first monastery was later replaced by another monastery whose church was consecrated in 1102 by Bishop Gelmires. Throughout the Middle Ages the monastery grew to such an extent that by the end of the 15th century it had become the richest and most powerful in Galicia. This led to it being almost completely rebuilt from the 16th century onwards. From then on, it was dependent on most of the male monasteries in Galicia. After its disamortisation in 1835, it began to have several other functions; from 1868 it became the major seminary of the Archdiocese of Compostela."
