"Wat Phra Kaeo, located on Trairat Road in the Wiang subdistrict of Chiang Rai, is renowned for being the site where the Emerald Buddha, or Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattana Patimakon, was discovered. The story dates back to 1354 when King Sam Fang Kaen ruled Chiang Mai. A lightning strike to an abandoned pagoda led to the discovery of a lacquered Buddha image, which, upon further inspection, revealed the Emerald Buddha once its glazed coat cracked. The sacred Buddha image was later moved to Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram in Bangkok, where it remains today.
In 1990, to honor HRH the Princess Mother's 90th birthday, the people of Chiang Rai constructed a new Emerald Buddha statue, known as "Phra Yok Chiang Rai" or Phra Phuttha Rattana Konnawutiwat Anuson Mongkhon. This statue was enshrined in the “Ho Phra Yok” at Wat Phra Kaeo, where it continues to draw worshippers. The temple also features "Hong Luang Saeng Kaeo," a two-story building constructed in the applied Lanna style, blending reinforced concrete with teak wood. This building functions as a museum, housing important Buddha images, including Phrachao Thanchai, Phra Prot Lok, and Phra Phuttha Si Chiang Rai. It also showcases modern exhibitions related to Buddhist art and culture, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's spiritual heritage."
