What people say

"Animated by day by markets and passing tourists (as well as the occasional art student), Piazza Santo Spirito is above all a meeting place in the evening for the nightlife of Florentines and foreigners, who create an interesting and lively mix, sometimes with a little too much excess. The square fills up especially in the early evening, when the artisan workshops and artists' studios of the Oltrarno close and the comings and goings begin in the trattorias, restaurants, cafes and nightclubs of the neighborhood. The square alone overlooks about ten different types of establishments, many with outdoor spaces where you can sit and eat or drink something. Piazza Santo Spirito dates back to the second half of the thirteenth century. It was built to accommodate the faithful who gathered to pray together with the Augustinian friars who had built a convent here with a church dedicated to "Santa Maria d'Ognissanti e allo Santo Spirito", which became more simply the "Church of Santo Spirito", from which the square then took its name."
