Cappelle Medicee

One of the most outstanding features of the Medici Chapels is the New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo. Within are sculptures created by Michelangelo himself, including the tombs of Lorenzo de' Medici and Giuliano de' Medici. 
Interestingly, the figures Michelangelo carved for these tombs don't represent the people buried there! Instead, they're allegorical figures representing times of day: Dusk and Dawn for Lorenzo's tomb and Night and Day for Giuliano's.

Burial place of the Medici family, the Medici Chapels are today a museum composed of the New Sacristy, created by Michelangelo in architecture and sculptures, the Chapel of the Princes, a monumental grand ducal mausoleum, and the crypts below.

Stopping in the Museo Dells Cappelle Medicee to visit the Cappella Dei Principi (Chapel of the Princes) is SO worth it! We had the entire Chapel to ourselves when we visited, it was one of the most stunning Chapels I have ever visited!  

Built as an extension of San Lorenzo, featuring the elaborate tombs of the Medici family. The New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo, is particularly notable for its statues of the Medici princes.
