"The best way to experience Red Valley is by hiking, as the area features interconnected valleys between Göreme and Çavuşin. While horseback riding or mountain biking are options (with rentals available in Göreme), hiking is preferable due to the technical and challenging nature of the routes. To preserve the valley's natural beauty, motorized vehicles such as cars, ATVs, and motorcycles are prohibited. The ideal times to hike are in the morning or during sunset when the colors of the landscape blend beautifully, creating a spectacular view. Hiking at night is discouraged for safety reasons.
To access Red Valley, a taxi ride from Göreme or Çavuşin takes about 10 minutes. A great starting point is the Panoramic View Point, where you can enjoy stunning vistas before hiking through the valley. Along the way, you can visit notable sites like Grape Church and Cross Church, with the full route being approximately 5 kilometers and mostly downhill. It’s advisable to grab a map from a local travel agent before your hike to navigate the area easily. The unique landscape of Red Valley has been shaped over millennia by volcanic activity, resulting in the soft tuff rock formations that define its swirling cliffs and fairy chimneys.
Red Valley's history dates back to the Byzantine period, around 900–1100 AD, when Byzantine Greeks enhanced the valley's agriculture and carved out cave churches. They built an extensive irrigation system, including water channels and cisterns, allowing for significant habitation in the valley. As you hike, you can still see remnants of these agricultural features, such as kitchens, beehives, and pigeon houses. Although much of the irrigation system was abandoned during the Ottoman Empire, Turkish farmers continue to cultivate their fields today, even within the Göreme National Park. The valley is dotted with cave churches, with Grape Church and Cross Church being the two best to visit. Both feature fairy chimneys and well-preserved frescoes, along with a nearby “Tea Garden” where you can enjoy fresh-squeezed orange juice while soaking in the beautiful surroundings."
