"The history of Yelapa is strong and somewhat mysterious. Entrance to the museum costs 50 pesos for foreigners. Yelapa's history traces its roots to over two thousand years ago, around 400 BCE, during the Aztec Empire's reign. In 1525, Spanish explorer Francisco Cortés de Buenaventura arrived, asserting Spanish sovereignty over the land and founding a settlement known as San Nicolás Acatlán. The village was subsequently rechristened "Yelapa" by its inaugural mayor, Don Narciso Guerrero Pacheco, in honor of his hometown in Michoacán.
Across the passing centuries, Yelapa has evolved into a significant cultural hub, deeply intertwined with fishing and subsistence farming. Visit the museum to find out about Yelapa's rich history. Check the calendar of events as they sometimes have special events going on. "
