Getting there..

Yelapa is only accessible by boat. You can either leave from Los Muertos Pier in Puerto Vallarta or Bocas de Tomatlan (the Bocas option is best if you have a car). Baggage is included in both routes. Yelapa can easily be a day trip from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita, San Pancho and surrounding areas. I highly recommend staying a night or two to get the full experience!

From Los Muertos Pier in Puerto Vallarta the water taxi departs at 11am, 11:45am (except Sundays), 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, and 5:30pm and it costs 380 pesos round trip. Hang onto your ticket for return. Boat ride takes about 45 min.

Relax on a pristine tucked away beach..

Yelapa Beach
@allifrerichs
Yelapa main beach is a dreamscape. Upon arrival you will be shocked with the beauty all around you. The bay has many floating boats from fishermen, water taxis, and sailboats/yachts visiting. Lush green hills overlook the bay's gorgeous clear blue water. There are many beach restaurants. Most will include chairs if you are eating or drinking. Sit back relax and let the super friendly locals take care of you as you enjoy a bite to eat and a drink! The beach will be come much more chill and less populated around 3PM as the day tours will be leaving around this time.

Waterfalls!

Cascada de Yelapa - Downtown
@allifrerichs
Located in the heart of Yelapa follow the arrow signs from the pier all over town that say "Cascada" or "Waterfall". You will walk past the church and cross a small bridge. After you walk past the water purification station, you should turn left on a cobblestone road, Calle Marlin, that leads uphill. Climb the path for about 0.3 miles passing vendors along the way until you arrive at the foot of the waterfall! You will find a 150ft tall waterfall running down a huge cliff into a rock pool below. Perfect to cool down on a hot day! There's a little bar to the right where you can buy snacks or a drink (Remember to bring cash). Depending on when you visit crowds can be small in low season and medium to large in high season. Must see!

Second Yelapa Waterfall- Rio Yelapa
@allifrerichs
To reach the second waterfall you will need to hike 4.9 miles round trip along a trail on the southern side of the Tuito River. To access the trail, start by heading east from the downtown area along the main road (Calle Marlin). As you walk, the road will curve south when it meets the river. On your left-hand side, you'll encounter the pedestrian bridge. However, stay on the same path, which will gradually shift from cobblestone to sandy, and eventually become mostly rocky. Around 0.7 miles in, you'll come across a small concrete shack with a distinctive blue door on your left. At this point, it might appear as though the trail fades into the river. But, in reality, the trail doesn't vanish completely. You'll simply need to channel your inner Indiana Jones and wade through the river to continue along the path. You'll encounter another river crossing after approximately another mile along the trail. Given these two river crossings, I strongly recommend wearing a hiking sandal, which essentially combines the features of a hiking boot and a water shoe into one. From this point onward, the trail winds its way through the vibrant jungle, leading you to a point where you'll need to navigate across some sizable boulders to reach the waterfall's shores. Depending on the water levels, it's typically possible to wade into the water and approach the waterfall's curtain closely. You might even discover a small rock bench to sit on, allowing the forceful cascade to provide a soothing back massage. Additionally, due to its secluded location, there's a great likelihood that you'll have this tranquil spot all to yourself! TIP: During our visit in October, the river's current was regrettably too strong because of recent rainfall episodes, preventing us from crossing. Therefore, if you're planning to visit during a notably rainy period, it's wise to adjust your expectations accordingly!

Mule & Horseback riding

Horses and mules remain a favored mode of transportation for the locals in a town where cars are notably absent. However, in recent times, 4x4 vehicles are also becoming more prevalent. You might encounter locals who extend offers for horseback or mule rides to the Yelapa waterfalls, viewpoint or the beach. Just ask any of the beach bars or restaurants where to get a horse. If it makes you feel more comfortable you can hire a guide if you don't want to worry about directions or aren't sure of horses. I have always been ok without a guide.

Hiking trails..

Yelapa Tapa - Lookout
@allifrerichs
This viewpoint is just a little over 3 miles from town (7.7 miles in/out) and available on google maps or all trails. It boasts views over all of Yelapa and all of Rivera Nayarit. It is considered a moderately challenging route and takes an average of 4 h 38 min to complete. Be prepared it is pretty much all uphill so make sure to bring plenty of water and a snack. This is a popular trail for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking but you can still enjoy solitude during quieter times of day.

Swimming, Snorkeling and Water Sports

While you're relaxing on the beach, taking a refreshing swim in the immaculate sea is practically a no-brainer! Feel free to enjoy a swim throughout Yelapa, just keep an eye out for boats and watch for waves crashing against the rocks. The Tuito River is also perfect to explore along on a hot day. The water is cold and refreshing as it comes from the top waterfall. Find a spot on some big boulders and enjoy the peace of nature and swim dips!

If you're fortunate enough to spend a few days in Yelapa, consider renting or bringing a snorkel to explore the water clarity and the abundant marine life around the rocky points surrounding Yelapa. Optimal water visibility and fascinating fish sightings await! On a day tour to Yelapa you will have the opportunity to snorkel if you want.

Water sports enthusiasts will find paradise here, with plenty of options to choose from. Paragliding is a common sight in Yelapa, you will see people up in the air as you are chilling on the beach. You can also rent kayaks from various spots along the beach and embark on your own exploration of the bay.

Wander the vibrant streets..

One of the truly enchanting aspects of Yelapa lies in the narrow, meandering pathways that weave through the heart of the main town and the hilly journey from town to beach. These streets are a visual delight, adorned with vibrant and festive flags, while being embraced by quaint local eateries. Along your stroll, you'll also encounter cheerful four-legged companions – friendly dogs eagerly awaiting a pat from passing travelers along with cowboys on horses.

Homemade Pies from the Pie Ladies:

One of Yelapa’s claims to fame when it comes to food are the fantastic homemade pies served by the ‘pie ladies’ who peruse the beaches and streets every afternoon. Their pies are sweet and are said to follow an age-old recipe that has been passed down through generations. Spotting the 'pie ladies' is inevitable, and treating yourself to one of these pies while in Yelapa is an absolute must!

Beach Bars:

The row of about six palapa bars along the main beach appears almost identical when it comes to their offerings. However, before you settle down for the day, it's valuable to recognize that most day trippers are directed to the cluster of chairs and umbrellas nearest to the lagoon. For a more spacious and crowd-free experience, head towards the northern end. It's also advisable to thoroughly review your bill to ensure there are no unexpected additional charges!

Accommodation

For those seeking a destination to truly detach from the world and fully embrace relaxation within a lush tropical haven, it might just be the ideal spot! Because of the history of Yelapa (see below) guesthouses are the most common accommodation in Yelapa and are primarily owned and operated by community members, with many being managed by descendants of the original inhabitants of Yelapa. Many of these houses are comfortable and gorgeous with traditional Mexican style rather than modern. I have listed some of my top recommendations below but because there are so many different guesthouses feel free to check booking.com or airbnb. Tip: If AC is important to you make sure to check the place you are booking has it as it's not the standard.

Casa Choco

This is my go to place to stay every time I come to Yelapa. It's very centrally located, has a very thoughtful amazing host Sandra, beautiful views, clean comfortable room, gorgeous spacious balcony, and AC! Very affordable. There are multiple rentals for different group sizes.

Casa Papaya Frente al Mar

Gorgeous hideaway 2 bedroom guesthouse perfect for relaxation. Very close walking distance to everything. Full kitchen & balcony with some of the best bay/river views in the village.

Casa Bahia Bonita

Nestled on Yelapa Beach opposite of the bay from the main town, this charming hotel offers a unique perspective, providing breathtaking views of the bay from private balconies and a cozy, secluded shaded seating spot. Clean rooms, beautiful pool and very kind staff. Best hotel on the main beach!

History

Yelapa's visitors arriving from day trips in Puerto Vallarta often overlook the captivating and distinct history of this stunning locale. The unique essence of Yelapa, can be attributed to the resilient history and unwavering determination of its indigenous residents, most of whom are descendants of the region's first settlers.Over the course of the last 150 years, the local inhabitants have fiercely battled to preserve their lifestyle, asserting their control and ownership of the land.The land is collectively held by the community, a practice that prevents external ownership (for more insight, the Museum of History, Art & Culture offers an informative exploration).

Yelapa Museum
@allifrerichs
The history of Yelapa is strong and somewhat mysterious. Entrance to the museum costs 50 pesos for foreigners. Yelapa's history traces its roots to over two thousand years ago, around 400 BCE, during the Aztec Empire's reign. In 1525, Spanish explorer Francisco Cortés de Buenaventura arrived, asserting Spanish sovereignty over the land and founding a settlement known as San Nicolás Acatlán. The village was subsequently rechristened "Yelapa" by its inaugural mayor, Don Narciso Guerrero Pacheco, in honor of his hometown in Michoacán. Across the passing centuries, Yelapa has evolved into a significant cultural hub, deeply intertwined with fishing and subsistence farming. Visit the museum to find out about Yelapa's rich history. Check the calendar of events as they sometimes have special events going on.

Tips & What to bring

As you prepare to journey to Yelapa, Mexico, remember that you'll be entering a realm of disconnection from the outside world. Here are essential items to bear in mind:

1. BRING CASH! Keep in mind that there are NO ATMs in Yelapa!

2. Sun Protection: Don't forget to pack reef safe sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and cover-ups to shield yourself from the sun, as there are limited shops around.

3. First Aid Kit: For added safety, consider including a first aid kit, especially given the compact size of local medical facilities.

4. Towels: Pack towels for laying on the beach or drying off after a swim, just in case your accommodation doesn't provide sufficient ones.

5. Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is vital, particularly during water taxi rides, hikes, and beach outings. Bring a reusable water bottle.

6. Snorkeling Gear: If you plan to snorkel independently, don't forget to bring your snorkeling equipment.

7. Reading Material: Embrace Yelapa's laid-back, unhurried pace by carrying a good book to enjoy during your stay.

8. Camera: Capture the awe-inspiring moments in Yelapa with your trusty camera.

Prepared with these essentials, you're ready to savor the serene charm of Yelapa while enjoying all the activities it has to offer!

Weather

This particular region of Mexico experiences well-defined dry seasons. While unexpected storms can occur at almost any time of the year, you can reliably expect a dry period from December to May, followed by rainy conditions from mid-June through October. If you're visiting during the rainy season, it's advisable to include a lightweight, breathable rain jacket in your packing list. Note that umbrellas are often ineffective against the tropical storms here and won't provide much assistance, especially on boats.
