"In Praça da Figueira, right in the center of Lisbon, before the great earthquake of 1755 that forever changed the city, the Hospital de Todos os Santos was located.
After the earthquake, and all the reconversion carried out by the Minister of the Kingdom of D. José I, Marquês de Pombal, Praça da Figueira became the city's main market, and a covered market was even built in 1885, which was later demolished in the 1950s.
Located between Martim Moniz and Praça do Rossio, the great festival of Santos Populares was held here, which nowadays animates the entire city.
The Square is surrounded by buildings that now house hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants with pleasant terraces.
In the center there is the equestrian statue of D. João I, the work of Leopoldo de Almeida, erected in 1971, in bronze, which nests on its pedestal hundreds of pigeons, already so characteristic of this place."
