"The city's best-known avenue, 1,300 metres long, runs from the Rotunda Sá Carneiro on the west side of the city to the Jardim do Almirante Reis to the east (at the start of the Old Town). It runs parallel to Avenida Arriaga, although they are longer. Built in the 1940s, this avenue owes its name to the expanse of sea that can be seen along its entire length and to the tribute paid to the Madeiran communities that exist throughout the world. It is popularly known simply as Avenida do Mar, a name that was given to it until the 1980s. Walking along the avenue from west to east, the first building that stands out is the emblematic Palácio de São Lourenço, the perfect postcard of the city, one of the examples of civil and military architecture on the island of Madeira, built in the 16th century. Here you can also visit the Military Museum, dedicated to this theme, which exhibits a collection of weapons from the 17th century to the present day. On the south side of this street, you will find the Funchal Marina, which can accommodate 210 boats and is home to several maritime tourism companies and a number of restaurants. A few metres from the City Quay, in an area bordered by lawns, you will find the remains of the Banger Pillar, built in 1798 to transport goods between ships and land. Demolished in 1939, it was resurrected in 1990, when the remains of this building were placed here. The diverse heritage built on this avenue includes the Legislative Assembly of Madeira (built in the former customs house), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Funchal Harbour Master's Office and the building that houses the Funchal Customs House, which are located along the same line, on the upper side of the avenue. On the south bank, you will find Praça do Povo, built in 2014 as a solution to the landfill created to protect the debris from the flood of February 20, 2010. It offers a relaxing garden area, with some art elements scattered throughout the garden, such as the Memorial to Nelson Mandela, inaugurated in 2014. Passing through Praça da Autonomia, you can visit the Electricity Museum, known by many as the “Casa da Luz”, located in the space where the old Funchal Thermal Power Station once operated. Access is via the north side of the building, on Rua da Casa da Luz, and it is a space that is also worth visiting."

"Next to Avenida do Mar you have a nice promenade filled with street vendors selling smoked chestnuts, snacks, sweets, souvenirs. Sometimes local musicians play their music. Ideal for an evening walk, catching sunset. "
