Široka ulica

"Široka ulica, commonly known as Kalelarga, is one of Zadar's most iconic streets, serving as the city's historical and cultural spine. Officially translated as "Wide Street," Kalelarga has been at the heart of Zadar's urban life since its origins. Although it originally measured just 5 meters wide, it has since expanded to 13 meters, reflecting the growth and development of the city over centuries. Kalelarga's history stretches back to Roman times when it was established as the Decumanus Maximus, the main longitudinal street in the Roman grid plan of the city. The street has undergone several name changes over the centuries, including Via Magna, Strada Grande, Ruga Magistra, and Calle Larga, reflecting the various influences on Zadar’s culture and language, notably Venetian. The street runs from Petar Zoranić Square to the Church of Our Lady of Health, passing through significant historical landmarks such as the Duke’s Palace, Narodni trg (People’s Square), and the Roman Forum. It offers a vivid journey through Zadar's history, from Roman remains and medieval buildings to the vibrant atmosphere of modern Zadar."
