"Isla Holbox is a little unknown, colourful, paradise on Earth.
I feel most people travelling to the Yucutan Peninsula don't know about it or consider it as a place to go not heir travels, however it was by far my favourite place on my travels.
Isla Holbox is a tiny island North of the Yucutan Peninsula, where the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea meet, thus it has a huge variety of marine life including whale sharks that migrate through in the summer months (May - September).
Getting to the island is done by ferries that pick you up near the bus stop in Chiquilá. Once on the island, there are no cars, but golf buggies instead as there are no roads on the island, it is just sand.
Most things on the island are within walking distance, and you can either stay in a hostel (what I did), or go for more high-end accommodation, or anything in between.
The island is famous for it's ceviche which is delicious and there are many boat tours where you can go out, catch your own fish and the locals will teach you how to make ceviche.
You will also have the chance to see bioluminescence in the sea if you visit when it is a new moon as a full or half moon creates too much light in the night sky to see the bioluminescence.
Of course, swimming with whale sharks is another huge attraction.
The vibe on the island is very relaxed, safe, and everyone there wants to have a good time and help when they can. It is an island that accommodates all needs from those that want to wake up early and do yoga on the beach, to those that want to have sundowners (there is always a good sunset on the island) and dance the night away.
If you are visiting the Yucutan Peninsula, Isla Holbox is an absolute must!

"Make your way to Isla Holbox port where you can buy your tickets and board a ferry (Holbox express or 9Hermanos) back to Chiquila port. Reserving your shuttle through the hostel means they can advise you of the pick up time from Chiquila and you can plan your ferry journey around this. I'll be honest, shuttles are a little cramped for space (I do prefer the ADO buses for space) but the shuttle is convenient for this journey as it seems there are only 2 daily buses."
