"With a width of over 140 meters, Sibiu's Piata Mare (Great Square) is aptly named, and for visitors, the huge pedestrian square is a strategic starting point for a tour of the city. Piata Mare, together with neighboring Piata Mica and Piata Huet, constitute the main hub of Sibiu's historic center and are home to some of the district's most impressive architecture.
Almost everywhere you turn in the square you come across historic landmarks. At the northern end of the square are the Turnul Statului (Council Tower), the Church of the Holy Trinity and the early 20th century City Hall, next to which is the tourist information office. To the west is the Brukenthal Museum and the Romanian Art Gallery, while the south and east sides are home to notable buildings such as the 15th-century Generalilor House and Hecht House; the Romanesque Casa Haller, now home to the Haller Café; and the 16th-century Weidner House, now a hotel.
Dating back to before the 15th century, Piata Mare has been the focal point of local life, hosting everything from town meetings and markets to executions. Today, it's a bustling life day and night, with a handful of cafes and restaurants surrounding the square and seasonal events like a Christmas market and summer fair taking place there throughout the year."

"Take a stroll around the large open square of historic Sibiu. Lining the square are restaurants with open air seating, historic buildings, and benches where you can sit to enjoy a gelato and people watching. "
