Escape to Charming Sibiu, Romania

Located in the mid-west of the country, Sibiu is in Transylvania with a view of the magnificent Southern Carpathian Mountains. The town has a strong Germanic influence and a romantic Old Europe charm. It is tourist friendly. You'll hear a blend of Romanian, German, Hungarian, and English being spoken around the city. Great for a day trip as you explore Romania, a long weekend visit, or stay a few days more! If you enjoy this guide, please save it, share it, leave a tip, or write a review! Sightseeing

Let's explore old town!

As you venture through the cobblestone pedestrian streets of Sibiu, keep and eye upward - you're being watched! One of the distinct architectural features of the historic district of Sibiu is the narrow horizontal windows built into the rooftops. They give the appearance of eyes, following you through the enchanting city.

The Bridge of Lies
@amyisgoingplaces
Podul Miciunilor, The Bridge of Lies, is your entry to the heart of historic Sibiu. Legend has it that if you tell a lie while standing on the bridge, it will collapse. Naturally, its a place where sweethearts come to confess their love to one another. If the bridge stands, it must be true love!

Saint Mary Evangelical Cathedral - Biserica Evanghelica Sfanta Maria
@amyisgoingplaces
You can't miss this church's spire, visible from much of the historic city center. The building's history spans centuries, and the architecture reflects doctrinal and denominational changes over time. Pay a small fee for a guided tour and, if you're up for the climb, the added tour to the bell tower. The views are magnificent. Check the church's event schedule before you go. They often have liturgical services open to the public, including midday prayer in Romanian, German, English, and Hungarian. They also have organ concerts weekly.

Muzeul Național Brukenthal
@amyisgoingplaces
Baron Samuel von Brukenthal amassed an impressive collection of works during his lifetime. These passed through his family until the lineage ended, at which point his palace became a public museum filled with his collections. The museum has expanded the collection over the years, building on what Brukenthal began and highlighting the Saxon heritage of the city of Sibiu. The palace-turned-museum was built in the Viennese Late Baroque style in the late 1700's.

Castelul de Lut Valea Zânelor - The Clay Castle
@amyisgoingplaces
Inspired by fairy tales of old, Castlelul de Lut, the Clay Castle, was built in 2014 by local craftspeople using traditional Romanian building techniques. Everything is handmade locally, down to the dishes inside. The castle is located in a peaceful valley by a river with mountainous views. It is about a 45 minute drive from the city of Sibiu (well worth a visit of it's own!). Plan to spend a day here exploring and have a meal at the restaurant on site. Vegetarian options are available. Check their Facebook page (linked below) for current hours, events, and ticket prices. NOTE: As of Fall 2024, Casteleul de Lut is closed for renovations. Upon reopening, they will function as a restaurant, resort, and events location and no longer offer a museum experience. Please check their website and Facebook page for the most up to date information prior to planning your visit.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
US native. Former resident of Romania. Current solo female globe trotter. I've ventured to more than a dozen countries across four continents as part of group tours, volunteer work, solo travel, studying abroad, and teaching internationally. I lived for over a year in Romania, many years in Tennessee, and several months in England. My travel style is slow, spontaneous, and - shall we say - richly flavorful. I prefer to stay longer lengths in places instead of having a whirlwind sightseeing venture. I'll skip the chain restaurants for a hole-in-the-wall café any day of the week. I prefer a loose itinerary and remain open to what each day brings. My favorite things to do and see as I travel are... - EAT - Try whatever is local. Order the special of the day. Talk with the restaurant staff. - WALK - It encourages me to slow down, notice, and get a feel for community. - HIKE - I'm a lazy hiker. By "hike," I mean a few hours at a slow pace. - MUSEUMS - Spend an afternoon. Read the descriptions on exhibits. Talk with the docents. Buy something in the giftshop. - CHURCHES - I'm fascinated by the various ways people have worshipped the God of the Bible over centuries and across borders. Many older churches are also museums or tourist-friendly spaces. Some additionally hold regular liturgical services. - CASTLES - Castles, fortresses, palaces, big ol' houses: these places transport me back in time. I imagine the people who built, lived in, and defended them. What would they think of how we now live? If this kind of travel sounds ideal to you, hit the Contact Me button!
