Himara Castle

"Himara Castle, also known as Babakus, is a significant historical site located in the old town of Himara (Himara Fshat), approximately 2.5 kilometers north of modern Himara and about 1 kilometer from the Ionian coast. This cultural monument has a rich history that spans over 3,500 years, originating with the Greek tribe of the Chaonians who first inhabited the area. The settlement began to fortify itself in the 8th century BC, and it was notably mentioned in writing by the Roman author Pliny the Elder in the first century AD. He described it as “On the Coast of Epirus, on the Ceraunian Mountains, is the Castle of Himara. Below the fountain of the royal water.” Throughout the Middle Ages and Byzantine period, Himara Castle evolved into a powerful stronghold, frequently changing hands due to various conquests and political shifts in the region. The castle underwent numerous destructions and restorations over the centuries, during which time additional structures, including houses and churches, were built within its walls. By the 8th century, it became the center of the Bishopric of Himara, emphasizing its importance as a religious and cultural hub. The castle remained inhabited until the 16th century, after which it began to decline as residents moved downhill closer to the Port of Himara. Despite its abandonment, Himara Castle still stands today, serving as a reminder of the town's storied past and its strategic significance throughout history. Visitors can explore the ruins and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it a popular attraction for those interested in the rich heritage of the Albanian Riviera."

"Castles in Albania are not what you might imagine. The "castle" consists of the whole area surrounding the top of the hill and even some homes are considered included in what is the castle. The castle in a traditional sense is only partially standing but the remains are stunning and the views from this particular castle are really incredible. There are 1 or 2 small bars up here where you could grab a drink and a snack. If i were to go back I'd bring some wine and snacks and watch the sunset! "
