"The Archaeological Museum in Zadar, situated on Forum Square, offers a fascinating exploration of the region’s history from prehistoric times through the early Middle Ages. To fully appreciate the chronological progression, start with the prehistoric exhibition on the second floor. Here, you’ll find decorative ceramics, weaponry, and items from the seafaring Liburnians, who brought influences from Greece and Italy. On the first floor, the Classical period is showcased, spanning from the Romanized Liburnians of the 1st century BC to the extensive Roman settlement of the 6th century AD. This section features an impressive collection of weaponry, artifacts from local necropolises, and Roman art, including sculpture, mosaics, and glassware from the 1st to 3rd centuries. Don’t miss the reconstruction of the Forum area as it was during Roman times. A smaller room highlights the development of Christianity in North Dalmatia, featuring rare artefacts from the Gothic invasions. The ground floor focuses on the early Middle Ages (8th to 11th centuries), displaying items from Croatian graves near Nin and stone furniture from ancient churches that have since disappeared. The museum presents ancient Rome in a contemporary light through thematic sections, illustrating life in ancient Zadar (Lader) and the southern Liburnian region of Northern Dalmatia. Among the permanent exhibits are statues of emperors such as Caesar, Augustus, and Tiberius, along with inscriptions, sculptures, and portraits that offer a deeper insight into this historic era."
