"The ruins of Kruja Castle are nestled at the base of the mountain in Kruja, a site rich with history and national significance. Within these ancient walls lies the National Museum of "Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu," commonly known as the Skanderbeg Museum, dedicated to Albania's most revered national hero. Skanderbeg is celebrated for his remarkable ability to unite Albanian families that had been divided for centuries. His return to Kruja, after spending his childhood in Turkey, forged an unbreakable bond between the man and the city, which became the heart of his resistance against the Ottoman Empire. As the leader of Albania during one of its most prosperous eras, Skanderbeg commanded an army that successfully resisted Ottoman advances for 25 years, until his death in 1468. The Skanderbeg Museum, which opened its doors in 1982, is more than just a national treasure—it is a symbol of Albania's enduring spirit and history. It is one of the most visited landmarks in the country, designed through a grand collaboration of experts across various fields. Renowned Albanian architects, led by Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha, spearheaded the museum's design, drawing inspiration from a conceptual framework devised by Aleks Buda, who was the chair of the Academy of Sciences of Albania at the time. The project also saw contributions from the distinguished historian Kristo Frashëri and the talented painter Bashkim Ahmeti. Initially conceived as a memorial, the museum’s architecture harmoniously blends with the medieval character of the castle while adding a contemporary touch to the Kruja skyline. Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by a large relief of Skanderbeg and his valiant soldiers, depicting pivotal moments from the many battles led by the national hero. This impressive sculpture intricately details the soldiers' attire and armor, offering a vivid representation of the period. The museum’s exhibits include numerous visual artworks that portray Skanderbeg in his various roles as a statesman, warrior, and commander. The museum’s pavilions house a wealth of documents, original bibliographies, and reproductions that chronicle Albania's history during the 15th century. The museum also provides a comprehensive look into the history of the Albanian principalities, with a chronological exhibit featuring artifacts such as ceramic, bronze, iron, and copper objects, alongside original icons and swords from the era. Among the treasures is a remarkable bell dating back to 1462. The museum walls are adorned with beautiful Byzantine-style frescoes that romanticize Skanderbeg’s return to Kruja and celebrate the unification of Albania’s once-divided principalities. To ensure an enriching experience for all visitors, the museum offers guided tours in both Albanian and English."
