House of the Blackheads

"The House of the Blackheads, also referred to as the Brotherhood of Black Heads House (Estonian: Mustpeade maja), is a historic building located in Tallinn, Estonia, not Riga, Latvia . It was formerly the headquarters of the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a social and commercial guild for unmarried foreign merchants, shipowners, and wealthy citizens of Tallinn. While the Brotherhood of Blackheads itself dates back to the mid-14th century, the House itself was acquired in 1517 and underwent a major renovation in 1597 under the supervision of architect Arent Passer. The building is a prime example of Renaissance architecture in Tallinn. Several Russian Tsars, including Peter I, Paul I, and Alexander I, all visited the House and were even made honorary members of the Brotherhood. The House of the Blackheads is known for its grand facade, adorned with mascarons (decorative faces), wrought iron weather vanes, and elaborate carvings. The building's ornamentation is believed to symbolize wealth, commerce, and good fortune. The interior features several grand halls, including the White Hall, known for its impressive plasterwork ceiling."
