"Stockholm Cathedral, known as Storkyrkan (Great Church) or Sankt Nikolai kyrka (St. Nicholas Church), holds the title of the oldest church in Stockholm and serves as the seat of the Diocese of Stockholm. Situated in the historic district of Gamla Stan, the cathedral first appears in written records dating back to 1279. Following the Protestant Reformation in 1527, it transitioned to a Lutheran church and was later designated as a cathedral when the Diocese of Stockholm was established in 1942, separating from the Dioceses of Uppsala and Strängnäs.
The architecture of the cathedral features a single tower constructed from covered brick, characterized by its yellow-painted walls accented with white details. Originally built in the Gothic style of the 13th century, the exterior underwent significant remodeling in the Baroque style around 1740, directed by architect Johan Eberhard Carlberg.
Among the cathedral's notable features is a wooden image of Saint George and the dragon, believed to date from the 15th century. This striking image functions as a reliquary, containing supposed relics of Saint George and other saints. Additionally, the cathedral is home to the oldest painting in Stockholm, dating back to 1520, further cementing its status as a vital historical and cultural landmark in the city."

"Right next to the Royal Palace you'll find this incredible cathedral. It doesn't look like much from the outside but once you step inside you'll be astounded. "
