Trippy Tour Guide
"Abbesses metro is named for the 12th-century Abbey of Montmarte, which once stood here. The station opened its doors in 1912, making this once remote neighborhood much more easily accessible from central Paris. This is one of the few stations to have kept its original art nouveau entrance designed by Hector Guimard. Art nouveau was an art and design movement popular at the turn of the 1900s. It was characterized by a focus on organic, flowing lines, and a celebration of natural forms. Take the time to examine the green canopy over the entrance -– the sinuous, flowing lines were made to imitate the wings of a dragonfly. Note the way even the typeface used on the signs imitates the asymmetry found in nature. It looks as though it could have just grown up out of the ground. While artists such as Salvador Dali revered these entrances, calling them “divine,” others were less impressed and found it too elaborate, and unharmonious with the city’s architecture. Over the past century, many of the original art-nouveau entrances have been replaced – making this one all the more special. It is perhaps unsurprising that Montmartre, which has long had a reputation for artistic innovation, has preserved this entrance. Directions at the end - cross the road and enter the park make your way over to the blue wall and stop in front of it."

"One of the metro stations featured throughout the film.
Pro tip: if you are exiting out of this station, you'll want to take the elevator, regardless of the number of people waiting. This is the deepest metro station in Paris with 285 steps."
