What people say

Kristen Mackiewicz
"Just up the road from Skarðsvík, you will run into these orange lighthouses that guard the shore. But another draw is the sea cliffs - a fantastic bird watching spot and possibly spot a whale surfacing in summer. Time: 15 minutes Rating: 3/5 Crowds: few Vehicle: accessible with 2wd, but it's a very bumpy road and is not maintained in the winter so I wouldn't risk attempting it November-March. Parking: small lots - you can walk between the two but I suggest driving. Amenities: none"

"The cliffs along the Snæfellsnes peninsula's western coast are so dangerous that two lighthouses were built quite close together. Svörtuloft, the older and taller of the two, was built in 1931. The second, Öndverðarnesviti, followed in 1973. Though this one is smaller with a boxy shape, its bright-orange color is still unmissable. A 2.5-kilometer path connects the two, if you're up for a windy walk along the top of the cliffs."

Mentioned in these guides

Active volcanoes. Dancing northern lights. Gushing geysers. Massive glaciers. Thermal hot springs. Thundering waterfalls. Iceland is the ultimate adventure destination. How have you not been here yet? It’s finally time. Start in the northernmost capital in the world. Reykjavik is a hip, modern city. Then start exploring the wild coastline, the sheep-filled countryside, the icy interior, and the peaceful islands. There are plenty of black-sand beaches, small fishing villages, turf-roofed houses, and epic hikes along the way. Just remember to pack layers. Sometimes, the Gulf Stream provides moderate temperatures. Other times, it’ll feel like you’re in the Arctic. Also don’t forget the long, dark winters and the 24-hour daylight during the short summers. If you take advantage of Icelandair’s free stopover program—a great excuse to visit Helsinki, Copenhagen, and even Paris—you can keep returning to discover which season you like best.
