" About: Selfoss is a beautiful horseshoe shaped waterfall just next door (South) of Dettifoss. Selfoss is still somewhat of a hidden gem, simply because people don’t usually take extra time to walk down to Selfoss. To get there, just follow the signs and the paths the opposite direction of Dettifoss. Time: 20 minutes driving from the main road to parking lot + 20 minutes walking from Dettifoss + 30 minutes for photos Rating: 5/5 Crowds: few-moderate Vehicle: The waterfall can be approached from both the East and West side, but it takes around an hour to drive to the other side so you’ll have to choose one. The West side (862) is accessible with any vehicle and easier to get to because the road is paved. The East side (864) is gravel and VERY rough road with thousands of potholes. I don’t personally recommend it with a 2wd, although I have seen these vehicles attempting the road. Both sides are easy to find as there signs pointing towards Dettifoss along Ring Road. Parking: no parking - park at Dettifoss parking (East or West) - free Views: No proper viewing platforms or overlook. With that said you can obviously get very close to the cliffside. Be VERY careful and don’t get too close for your safety and to preserve the cliff! Seasonal: In the winter, the East side road is usually impassible. Also allow for extra EXTRA walking time walking from Dettifoss as the path is uneven and can be VERY slippery. Again, Yaktrax for winter travel will allow you to walk comfortably! Amenities: none - use toilets at Dettifoss Pro-tip: Photographers will need a tripod + polarizer to get a nice silky shot of the falls."
