What people say

"It may seem a little morbid, but hey...why not visit this little spot? The Catacombs of San Gaudioso are an ancient underground cemetery located under the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità - which also deserves some of your time! They were used as a cemetery from the third century AD. and are named after the bishop of Abitene, Saint Gaudioso, whose burial is said to be located inside the catacombs. There are about 40 tombs, including those of saints and martyrs and some of the tombs are decorated with frescoes and mosaics. It is amazing to me how there is practically another world beneath the busy streets of Naples. Each step underground is a step into history dating back to the 2nd century. Pretty cool. Tickets are available online and I strongly suggest that you reserve in advance. Opening hours From Mondays to Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm (Last admission 5 pm) Tickets are 11 Euro for adults ( 7 Euro if you have the Artecard), 5 Euro for under 18 years old, under 6 years old are free.
