"A visit to Porte Sante cemetery (also known as Sacred Doors) is worth the trip not only to admire its beauty and grandeur but also for the majestic panoramic views which surround this sacred site.
The location of the cemetery was chosen during the 1800’s to safely bury victims of the cholera epidemic. The site was chosen as it was a good distance away from the centre of the city and with it being positioned on the top of a hill it also received a good airflow. Situated only a short walk from Piazzale Michelangelo, a visit provides the perfect hike through the serene hills of Florence to uncover one of Tuscany’s most important monumental cemeteries.
The quiet burial plot is hidden away behind the historic San Miniato al Monte church and can be accessed by a small gate to the left of the basilica. Both regular citizens and important figures have been interred here including politicians, artists and writers. As you enter you will find a small section of the burial ground to your left filled with rich artworks, impressive mausoleums and weathered niches. Moving into the main area of the cemetery, the land is divided into larger plots featuring private chapels, funeral monuments and artistic sculptures. Many of the tombs are inspired by Florence’s Medieval and Renaissance churches and feature various architectural styles from Neo-classic to Art Nouveau.
The cemetery design was originally entrusted to architect Niccolò Matas (who also designed the façade of the Basilica of Santa Croce) and when the plot was later expanded in 1864 architect Mariano Falcini became involved.
As you are exploring the serene paths you will find one of the cemeteries most noteworthy graves dedicated to the Mazzone siblings. The effigies depict the brother and sister dancing together after being reunited in the afterlife. Sadly, Mario died whilst serving as a pilot during WW1 and is shown wearing his pilot’s uniform and Maria died just before she was due to be married so is shown dressed in her wedding gown. From this location you can easily access the elevated area of the cemetery where you can acquire more stunning views of this artistic open-air museum and appreciate the beauty of the landscaping and the tranquillity it brings."
