Vítkov

"Under the reign of Charles IV, the Vítkov slopes were transformed into fertile vineyards, some of which were owned by the Prague alderman Vítek of Hora, lending the hill its name. A significant historical event took place on July 14, 1420, when Hussite troops led by Jan Žižka achieved a decisive victory over the Crusaders, leading to the area's subsequent designation as Žižkov. Over the centuries, the vineyards fell into disrepair, and it wasn't until the late 19th century that efforts began to convert the raw hill into a public park, a project initiated by František Thomayer. However, the onset of World War I stalled these plans. The area underwent substantial development during the construction of the National Memorial, which started in 1929. While the plateau around the Memorial features sparse vegetation, the slopes are lush with dense greenery, creating a majestic green backdrop. The park boasts a diverse range of flora, including black locust, Norway maple, tree of heaven, horse-chestnut, small-leaved lime, Turkey oak, white mulberry, eastern white pine, honeysuckle, and spiraeas. The access road from Ohrada is adorned with silver maples, and a network of trails weaves through the dense vegetation along the Vítkov slopes. Covering an area of 14.93 hectares, this park serves as a tranquil oasis amidst the urban landscape, inviting visitors to explore its natural beauty and historical significance."
