"The Ascensor da Glória, popularly referred to as Elevador da Glória, is located in the city of Lisbon, in Portugal, connecting Baixa (Praça dos Restauradores, 17 m alt.) to Bairro Alto (Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara, 61 m alt. .). It is one of three funiculars operated by Carris (such as its 51E route), and of these it is the busiest, carrying more than 3 million passengers annually.
Built by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, it was inaugurated on October 24, 1885, becoming the second of its kind implemented in the city on the initiative of the Nova Companhia dos Ascensores Mecânicos de Lisboa. The original traction system was rack and cable balanced by a water counterweight, later changing to steam. In September 1915 it began to be powered by electricity."
Francisco Franco Pêgo
"In my opinion, the most scenic funicular trip in the city, right in the city centre, connecting downtown and the area with the most viewpoints. As such, it's also easy to incorporate in your tour."
