"When the Ferry Baldur crosses Breidafjördur en route to the Westfjords from Stykkishólmur, it makes one stop along the way. It's an island called Flatey. Flat Island is, in fact, nearly flat. It's also quite small (two kilometers long by about one kilometer wide). Flatey has had many lives. A monastery was founded on the island's highest point in 1172. A Danish town, with a thriving art scene, was then established in 1777. Today, it's mostly a summer destination (only five people stay all winter). The ferry dock is in the Old Village. It's where visitors arrive and sheep depart to be slaughtered. A dusty, car-free road winds through the center of the island. It's lined with colorful houses, fish drying racks, and lots of sheep. Migratory birds (Arctic terns, puffins) are the only things more abundant than sheep. There's a single hotel, a small church, and an even smaller library, as well. Flatey is a quiet, peaceful escape from the mainland.
If you tell an Icelander that you visited Flatey, their eyes will probably light up with memories from their childhood. You just earned tourist bonus points. This is a hidden, local gem.
Note: If you plan on visiting Flatey, book the ferry long in advance (preferably months). The summer ferries are frequently booked solid."

"Flatey is another jewel in the Westfjords. Small island located in Breiðafjörður, only two farmers live there year long, and they hate each other. In the summer, a lot of people have their second house there and spend a few weeks with friends and family. If you have the budget, you can stay at the hotel, or you have the option to stay at the campsite by the church and pitch your tent. It is on private land so you need to pay the farmer. "

"A small island with very rich birdlife. One of its inhabitants: the clown of the sea, puffins!"
