"The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs, also known as Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Italian, is a truly unique basilica church in Rome, Italy. What makes it special is its location – it was constructed within the frigidarium, or cold bath hall, of the ancient Baths of Diocletian during the 16th century . The design is attributed to the famed Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, though later modifications were made by other architects.
The basilica is dedicated to Christian martyrs, both known and unknown. Its construction served the purpose of both creating a place of worship and giving new purpose to the abandoned bath complex. The resulting structure is a fascinating blend of Christian and Roman architecture."

"A basilica and titular church, built inside the ruined figidarium of the Roman baths of Diocletian in Piazza della Repubblica. It was constructed in the 16th century following an original design by Michelangelo. Other architects and artists added to the church over the following centuries. The original building was a bath house until the fall of Rome in the 6th century. "
