FREE | 36 Hours in Washington, D.C. | Premium Itinerary

Come with us for a whirl-wind trip to the capital city! This trip is planned for a Friday-Sunday weekend but could be adjusted to any 3 day travel window. DC is a great weekend destination because most activities are centrally located, and a majority of the museums and monuments included in this itinerary are completely free! Additionally, this trip is a great example of what you could expect if you book my "Premium Itinerary" travel services. šŸ§³Trip summary Day 1 - Travel & settle in Day 2 - Memorials & Government Day 3 - Museum highlights Why this guide? šŸ“’ Hyper-detailed itinerary. This isn't your basic list of suggested activities & restaurants. Your days will be covered down to the minute, including time allotted for travel between activities and recommended transportation options. šŸŽŸļø Advance ticket purchase recommendations. Avoid the lines - and disappointment - by booking tickets ahead of time. You'll be guaranteed entrance and will enjoy walking straight in, past any lines for ticket purchases. Special call outs for combo tickets to bundle and save will also be included where available! šŸ§¾ Location-specific packing list. This won't be a comprehensive list (surely you've remembered your socks), but it will cover some key items to toss in your bag for a truly great experience at your destination. šŸ† Honorable mentions. Unless you booked a one way ticket (jealous!), you've only got a limited time to explore. The suggested itinerary includes my opinions of the best choices for first time visitors with general interest. Feel free to swap those out with any of the honorable mentions. āœØ And finally... If you are looking for a more tailored experience with a unique twist based on your interests, travel dates, and more, a custom itinerary may be best. I look forward to helping bring your vacation vision to life!

Itinerary

Friday

Fly into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) for the easiest access to get into the city in the morning. Alternatively you can choose to fly to Dulles International Airport (DIA), but you'll want to choose a hotel closer to the city.

If you fly to Ronald Reagan (DCA), a hotel close to the airport is a great choice for a weekend trip when time is precious since the drive into the city is less than 10 minutes.

Depending on your arrival time, either head to bed or check out the restaurants or bars nearby. There are several great options nearby on 23rd street between S Fern & S Eads, including:

After dinner, head back to the hotel and get ready for an early start on Saturday!

Saturday

Day 1 is all about memorials and government, but you'll end the day practicing your espionage skills while exploring the International Spy Museum. Be sure you aren't carrying a bag larger than 18x16x8 inches for the Washington Monument tour, and leave any lighters, aerosols (sunscreen included), or sharp objects behind. If it's expected to be sunny or rainy (or both!) it's never a bad idea to pack an umbrella.

This plan is good for a nice weather day. If you're expecting rain, consider switching Saturday & Sunday, but note that the Capitol and Library of Congress are not open on Sundays. Throw a pair of earbuds in your bag to be prepared for the audio tour at the Library of Congress.

Saturday Morning

From your hotel, catch a quick 10 minute Uber or Lyft to the Memorials. You'll take a leisurely pace through each Memorial over the next two hours, ending at the Washington Monument. This schedule is ideal for 11am tickets to the Washington Monument, but could be adjusted or reversed based on your ticket time.

8:15 AM: Uber to FDR Memorial and start your walking tour of the Memorials. (You'll want to be dropped off at the North West entrance to the memorial so you can walk FDR's presidency in chronological order, then double back as you head towards MLK. We're getting our daily steps in early!)

When you're done, take the stairs down (or elevator if required) to one floor below to see the small museum exhibit. Then head back down the elevator, with brief opportunities to see donated stones from states & organizations around the country. Expect the whole experience to take less than 30 minutes once your group is called, but if they are running behind you'll be waiting outside for a while.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hi! I'm Lucy, the type-A, overly organized, travel enthused person behind Getaway Goose. I'm everyone's favorite travel companion because I'm that friend. The one who plans a trip down to the minute. The one who has thought of everything, packed everything, and wants to do everything. As my dad put it so eloquently in his Father of the Bride speech, "if you want to have a good vacation, just have Lucy go there first." I specialize in incredibly detailed travel itineraries that ensure you get the most bang for your buck and most experiences for your travel time on every single trip. You can expect detailed timings along with any and all pre-trip arrangement information to guarantee every second of your trip is spent in vacation-mode not the black hole of "what do we do?", "where do we eat?", and "when should we go?" My husband is my most frequent travel companion, but I am no stranger to planning trips for large groups of people, and all of my plans could also be modified for solo or family travel with children. I hope you'll count me as your newest travel buddy and enjoy all the adventures I have to share!
