Best Things to Do in Shenandoah National Park - Spring, Summer & Fall
Shenandoah National Park stretches over 200,000 acres and features the famous Skyline Drive, which runs for 105 miles along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Spring brings wildflowers, summer is perfect for hiking, and fallβwell, it's leaf-peeping season, and the colors are unforgettable.
You can enter the park with your vehicle at four points along Skyline Drive: Front Royal at mile 0, Thornton Gap at mile 31.5, Swift Run Gap at mile 65.5, and Rockfish Gap at 104.6.
Hikes
For hikers, Shenandoah offers trails for all skill levels. Here are some of the top hikes to check out.
Compton Peak (MM 10.4)
After entering the park from the north, start your day with a climb to Compton Peak at mile marker 10.4. This 2.4-mile round-trip hike offers stunning views and a chance to see rare columnar jointing, unique volcanic rock formations that are a geological wonder.Β
Mary's Rock (MM 31.6)
If you're looking for a more challenging hike, Mary's Rock will reward you with panoramic views at the summit. This 3.7-mile trail is moderately difficult and can get busy on summer weekends.
Stony Man (MM 41.7)
One of the park's easier trails, Stony Man, offers sweeping views without too much effort. Ideal for families and groups.Β
Limberlost Trail (MM 43)
If you're looking for an accessible, easy walk, Limberlost Trail is a peaceful, scenic 1.4-mile loop path surrounded by towering trees.Β
Hawksbill Summit (MM 45.6)
The highest peak in the park, Hawksbill Mountain, offers 360-degree views at 4,050 feet.
Dark Hollow Falls (MM 50.7)
For a classic Shenandoah experience, Dark Hollow Falls is a must. This relatively short hike leads you to a beautiful waterfallβa perfect spot to cool off in summer and great for leaf-peeping in the fall.
South River Falls (MM 62.7)
Another stunning waterfall hike, South River Falls, is excellent in spring when the flow is strongest. It's an ideal spot to cool off in summer, but remember that you'll feel the 900-foot elevation gain on your way back.

Dickey Ridge (MM 4.6)
Dickey Ridge is one of the first major stops after entering from the Front Royal entrance. While you're there, stop by the visitor center for helpful info about the park.
Hogback Overlook (MM 20.7)
One of the largest overlooks in the park, Hogback Overlook gives you a true sense of Shenandoah's scale.
Tunnel Parking Overlook (MM 32.5)
Tunnel Parking Overlooks comes soon after crossing the tunnel under Mary's Rock.
Hazel Mountain Overlook (MM 33)
Hazel Mountain at mile marker 33 is a quiet spot with expansive views, perfect for watching the sunrise.
Jewel Hollow Overlook (MM 36.4)
Jewel Hollow, another favorite down the road, offers wide-open vistas any time of year.
Skyland Lodge (MM 42)
Skyland Resort sits at 3,680 feet, the highest elevation on Shenandoah National Park's scenic drive. While you're here, stop by the dining hall for a meal with a view or grab a coffee and enjoy it from the deck.
Crescent Rock Overlook (MM 44.4)
One of the less crowded overlooks, Crescent Rock, is an excellent place for photos.
Big Meadows (MM 51.2)
Big Meadows is a classic for sunset, with its sweeping meadow and mountain views.Β
