Shenandoah National Park stretches over 200,000 acres and features the famous Skyline Drive, which runs for 105 miles along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Spring brings wildflowers, summer is perfect for hiking, and fallβ€”well, it's leaf-peeping season, and the colors are unforgettable.

You can enter the park with your vehicle at four points along Skyline Drive: Front Royal at mile 0, Thornton Gap at mile 31.5, Swift Run Gap at mile 65.5, and Rockfish Gap at 104.6.

Compton Peak (MM 10.4)

After entering the park from the north, start your day with a climb to Compton Peak at mile marker 10.4. This 2.4-mile round-trip hike offers stunning views and a chance to see rare columnar jointing, unique volcanic rock formations that are a geological wonder.Β
